The Victorian Mounted Rifle Regiment commenced in 1885, and contributed to the formation of the Australian Light Horse after Federation.

Formerly known as Kitchener's Camp, the Site 17 military area to the east of Seymour was the main training area for both the VMR and the ALH.

Today the mature trees and natural vegetation form an interesting blend with the ruins and relics of Site 17's days an extensive army camp.
