So why build a Web Site? That's not actually a question I asked myself until after I'd
started. Initially I saw it as a memorial, but the more it took shape, the more I realised
that Yvonne wouldn't like to have a Site that only served that purpose. Vonnie had too
much life in Her for that, and would want people to come here for the fun of it.
Sept 20, 2006
That helped me to understand myself what I was doing. Vonnie had so much left to do
with Her life, when it was tragically cut short, so I'm going to finish a few things off for Her.
In the process I've also discovered that as I put all the pieces of Her life together, I'm becoming closer
to Her again after I thought that we'd been separated forever. She's been here helping
me with this every step of the way, although She does keep having ideas about things faster
than I can figure out how to implement them!
My aim then, with the Site, is in a large part to bring My Girl to life for anyone who visits these pages.
Some of you will already know Her nearly as well as I do, so for you lucky folks I hope
that we can fill in some gaps for you. For everyone, please help me rejoice in the
recollection of a life well-lived.
That's a little bit of the 'why?' As to the 'how?', unfortunately things weren't so clear to
start with. I translated a long-held wish to start a site for Tweet into an application
to register yvonneclaireadams.com as our Domain, and then realised that I had no idea how to create
a Web Site for it. Hmm. I had general understanding of
approximately two HTML tags and nothing else, so I decided to just start with that and learn some more
as I went. Brimming with confidence, I sat down and typed my first Web Page.
Click *here* to see it in all it's
glory. I thought I'd add a couple of bits to make it pretty, and after that it was all uphill.
I've discovered that you can actually learn things on the WWW, so I hit all the HTML Tutorial Sites and
in no time I was completely bamboozled. In the end I used the Sculptor's Trick.
I filled up a page with every tag that I could get to work, and then removed everything
that didn't look like it belonged on Yvonne Adams' Web Site.
The result of that was 'Test Web 4' but the way it was constructed was so hokey that I'd never have
been able to expand it, and it looked pretty drab. Have a
lookie if you like. Before I had a chance to rebuild it, I received ownership of the Domain
@ 7:00 am on Friday, 1 September, 2006. After a somewhat intense couple of hours
learning what ftp:// meant, I uploaded the Web @ 9:00 that morning and Vonnie lived again, in Cyberspace,
as well as here with me.
'Test Web 4' underwent a complete metamorphosis when I discovered (and went berserk with)
Framed Pages and Java, emerging as 'Vonnie's Web 1' which is what's here now.
Discovering that FrontPage wasn't a slide-show making programme as I'd previously thought, was a
big help. Up until then I was creating the pages with good old Notepad.
I still prefer to use it for writing and editing the actual HTML. 'Old
Habits' from three weeks ago :) Paint Shop Pro has been my box of crayons for years,
so I had most of the techniques that I needed to make the pretty pictures. I've got
some Macromedia Flash thingies planned, but I haven't learned to be subtle enough with it for Vonnie's
Site yet. As usual, the thing I left until last because it would be the easiest turned into
something else. I'd created all of the pages with lots of nice fonts, not realising that
embedding them into the pages is a nightmare for a beginner. After a few dozen
hours learning how to use WEFT 3, I then had to go through every page and re-font all the bits that I'd
left as 'default font' anyway. Serious oops that one. Vonnie's Web 2
will be nothing if not fontastic, now that I've figured that out.
So that's a quick history of something that doesn't have a history yet. I've got plenty of time
and an Angel looking over my shoulder to give me advice, so I hope it will eventually grow into
something big enough suit a girl as boundless as my mate, Yvonne Claire Adams.
(She insisted I get it started before the year was up, and I only just made it!)
